While other partner institutions in the NFDI4Biodiversity network contribute their own data or technical support, the Leipzig-based IfL supports the members of the consortium in developing new publication formats, among other things. The aim is to visualize
biodiversity data itself or its mobilization within the consortium in order to enable new perspectives and thus facilitate understanding – which is not always immediately obvious when it comes to the complex topic of data. One of the formats created in this
way is the data story: Viewers can scroll through an article enriched with illustrations, maps, graphics and videos and thus get to know a topic in a more lively way than would be possible with text alone.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;color:black">The first of these stories highlights how a data set harmonized in NFDI4Biodiversity was used to identify the decline of even common fish species – which now makes it possible to take
effective conservation measures in good time. The data story is based on data from 72 fish species from 12 federal states – and illustrates the great potential of mobilized and harmonized data and thus also of NFDI4Biodiversity. The first Data Story was developed
together with the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) and the
Red List Centre, which publishes the endangered lists for around 37,000 animal and plant species.

A second data story about bird data with the Federation of German Avifaunists (DDA) is already in the works and will shortly be published as well. After the format was evaluated very positively by the Consortium's Steering Committee, further partner institutions
will be given the opportunity to implement data stories in the future.
