hiermit möchten wir Sie noch einmal an den kommenden Workshop im Rahmen des NFDI4Biodiversity Topic Tables „AI tools for metadata extraction and enrichment in sequence databases“ am 25. und 26. Juni 2026 erinnern.


Für die Teilnahme vor Ort sind aktuell noch Plätze verfügbar. Zudem wurde das Zimmerkontingent im vorgesehenen Hotel bis zum 24. April verlängert.

im Rahmen des NFDI4Biodiversity Topic Tables zum Thema „AI tools for metadata extraction and enrichment in sequence databases“ laden wir Sie herzlich zu einem ersten Workshop am 25. und 26. Juni 2026 ein. Ziel des Topic Tables ist es, Akteur:innen aus Forschung, Dateninfrastrukturen und Tool-Entwicklung zusammenzubringen, um aktuelle Ansätze zum KI-gestützten Extrahieren und Anreichern von Metadaten aus Sequenzdaten zu diskutieren und gemeinsame Perspektiven zu entwickeln.


Der Workshop wird von Kolleg:innen des Leibniz-Instituts für Ostseeforschung Warnemünde (IOW) organisiert und bildet den Auftakt einer Reihe von drei Veranstaltungen über das kommende Jahr hinweg. Neben Impulsvorträgen steht insbesondere der Austausch über bestehende Tools, offene Herausforderungen und mögliche gemeinsame Standards im Fokus. Als Ergebnis des Topic Tables ist unter anderem ein gemeinsames White Paper geplant.

Background:

Machine-readable, standards-compliant metadata are the foundation for the automated reuse of scientific data. In recent years, petabytes of sequencing data have been generated worldwide and made available through public archives. For biodiversity research, these data hold enormous potential—yet the associated metadata are often minimal and not interoperable. Crucial contextual information is frequently available only in free-text descriptions, making it difficult to access and process automatically. At the same time, advances in AI models open up new possibilities for systematically analyzing such unstructured text and extracting or enriching metadata. Numerous projects are developing corresponding tools, but often without close coordination. This Topic Table aims to foster exchange, create synergies, advance common standards, and address key challenges such as quality assurance, interoperability, and long-term sustainability.

Discussion: Quo vadis – Which tools are missing? What are the pitfalls and problems of current approaches? What do we need and where should it be implemented?

A white paper is planned as the output of this topic table. This wrap-up session is about setting up the structure of the paper and assigning tasks in preparation for the second topic table.


General information:
The registration procedure includes a short survey to help us prepare the workshop. It should take ~ 5 minutes to complete it. In person participation is limited to 12 people. Places will be assigned first come, first served. Online participation will be more flexible. Participation is possible for both days of the workshop or only for the first day depending on how active you would like to contribute to the white paper.

For accommodation, a contingent of rooms has been reserved at a WIROtel in Warnemünde (https://wirotel.wiro.de/wirotel-warnemuende.html) until 31.03.2026 (110 - 140€ per night, minimum 2 nights). Alternative accommodation may be available in the youth hostel (https://www.jugendherberge.de/jugendherbergen/warnemuende/) or in the City of Rostock.
